How does your staff represent the communities you serve or hope to serve? In what ways does your internal culture support and empower minoritized staff members? Join us for our May 2021 Nonprofit Leadership Council- Your Community, Your Leadership: Cultural Proficiency & Staying Relevant to the Communities You Serve as we discuss the importance of cultural proficiency and relevance in nonprofit work, in both the internal and external ways we pursue our organizational missions. The afternoon will feature a keynote presentation by Veronica Valadez, MA and Gabriel Orosco, of Ehactl Wind Philosophies, defining and discussing the importance of cultural proficiency in the nonprofit sector. Participants will be guided to reflect on how your organization’s cultural competency directly impacts your ability to hire and empower BIPOC staff, as well as your ability to build trust with the communities you serve. Following the keynote presentation, join us for a panel where we will hear from local organizations about the ways cultural proficiency and relevancy show up in their organization’s work.

Featured panelists:

Genevieve Flores-Haro, Associate Director, Mexteco Indigena Community Organizing Project/Proyecto Mixteco Indigena (MICOP)

Maricela Morales, Executive Director, Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE)

Tim Nafziger, Board Member, Abundant Table

Honor Veterans on Monday 31 May 2021 Memorial Day

VFW Post 7139 and American Legion Post 160
Honor Veterans on Monday 31 May 2021 Memorial Day

We invite the public with us to remember and honor all Service men and women who gave their lives to protect us, our freedoms, and way of life from the Civil War to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. To honor all our fallen veterans, we will place American Flags on all veterans graves at the Mission, Chalk Hill, Oak Hill, and Saint Marks Cemeteries.  Any veteran who wants to help place the flags at Oak Hill Cemetery should be there at 9a.m. on Saturday, 29 May.  There will be no Cemetery Ceremonies on Memorial Day.
We will have a special Memorial Day Program starting at 11a.m both in front and inside of the Solvang Memorial Veterans Hall to dedicate memorial plaques honoring 19 Santa Ynez Valley Residents who gave their lives in service to our nation.  The plaques again honor the 18 veterans on the plaque in Solvang Park adding SSgt Timothy Manchester who died this year in the War on Terror.  The program will start in the front of the Veterans Hall and will include a tour of the plaques inside of the Big Hall.
The Memorial Day remembrance includes a 229-year span in some 60 military actions that claimed 1.4 million lives. Sacrifice is meaningless without remembrance. America’s collective consciousness demands that all citizens be aware of, and recall on special occasions the deaths of their fellow countrymen during and after wartime. All Valley veterans, residents, and their families should honor veterans on this hallowed day.
